01/ Hello, my name is Anna Volkidou. While I initially trained and worked as an engineer in Greece, I have always had a passion for teaching, tutoring and languages. So, when I moved to Australia, 12 years ago, I began teaching Greek, my native language - and I have never looked back!
02 / I use a range of educational material including coursebooks, authentic texts, multimedia, and audiovisual aids to help my students learn and improve their knowledge of Greek grammatical structures and vocabulary. My lessons actively promote the development of the four basic language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) through engaging and interactive activities that are tailored to my students’ interests and learning goals. For example, a variety of texts, including newspaper articles, advertisements, instruction manuals and modern Greek literature & poetry, can be used to promote the development of reading skills. Likewise, role plays, dialogues and presentations can be used to practice speaking and listening skills. Writing topics are always negotiated with my students to ensure that they find the task relevant and interesting.
03 / I often compare the process of learning Greek to an eye-opening journey, a personal odyssey through which you will not only learn a new language but will also become intricately connected to an ancient culture while simultaneously developing your critical thinking, problem solving and creative skills. My role, as your teacher, is to guide you through your personal odyssey. It is my job to facilitate your Greek language journey by providing a supportive and stimulating learning environment and designing & implementing a personalized curriculum that will help you achieve your learning goals.
As we journey towards your Ithaca, we may need to reroute the journey and overcome obstacles. However, this is all part of the adventure! I believe that it is paramount for the teacher-student relationship to be forged in trust, transparency and open communication. This will enable us to periodically re-evaluate your learning goals and progress so that we can make any necessary changes. I always encourage my students to speak to me about any issues, both positive and negative, that they encounter in their studies so that we can work together to optimize their learning.
